Connect your own carrier accounts (BYOA)

Updated 2026-09-07

On this page

Bring-your-own-account (BYOA) uses your carrier contract for rating and billing while you still operate labels inside Nitromule next to platform rates.

When to use BYOA

  • You already have negotiated UPS/FedEx (or supported USPS) pricing
  • You want those rates in the same shop as Nitromule platform offers
  • Finance wants postage on the carrier invoice, not only Nitromule Billing

Requirements

  • Active carrier account you can authorize
  • Nitromule account with carrier connect enabled
  • Default ship-from address for rating
  • Understanding that platform and BYOA rows can both appear in the rate table

Steps

  1. Open carrier / account settings in Nitromule.
  2. Choose the carrier (UPS, FedEx, or supported USPS path).
  3. Complete the carrier’s authorization / account linking screens.
  4. Return to Nitromule and confirm the connection shows active.
  5. Open Get Label or an order and get rates.
  6. Verify the rate source shows your account where supported.
  7. Buy a low-cost test label and confirm billing lands where you expect (carrier invoice vs Nitromule Billing).
  8. If rates still look like platform-only, disconnect/reconnect and re-rate.

Platform vs BYOA

Platform rates BYOA
Who bills postage Nitromule Billing (postage + markup) Your carrier account per contract
Setup Default Requires successful connect
Best for Fast start, no carrier negotiation Existing contracts
Failed payment Update Nitromule Billing Fix carrier account status with UPS/FedEx

Day-to-day tips

  • Always read the rate source column before buying
  • Signature/insurance extras may differ by account
  • Void unused BYOA labels in Nitromule and confirm carrier-side refund rules
  • Portal shipping rules can hide BYOA services — check portal rules

Troubleshooting

  • Rates still show only platform → reconnect; confirm authorization not expired
  • Purchase errors on BYOA → check carrier account status directly with UPS/FedEx
  • Some lanes missing → carrier may not offer that service on your contract
  • See rates not showing and carrier guides (UPS, FedEx, USPS)
